A Little Stranger (1989)
This second novel by Candia McWilliam (she of the photograph) is a slim, creepy, poetically written tale about a wealthy young woman and a suspect nanny. It's not the type of book (it's not the style of book) that I tend to like. It's completely overwritten and I was never certain whether the author was showing off her abilities or whether she were trying to characterize her narrator. Regardless, the unreliable narrator meant that the central thrust of the book was hidden till the very end. This, and the fact that the book was so short, was what kept me reading.
