The first published novel by John D. MacDonald. It doesn't read like him at all, much too corny and hardboiled, like an approximation of a James M. Cain novel, but ... it's still a great read, and the story, about an insurance investigator in a very corrupt Florida town, is a doozy. The plot twists are fast and furious, and there's a lot of pulpy action.
